| Construction of homes began in Sun City West in 1979 as
space for new homes ran out in the original Sun City. In 1999, Multiple
Listing Service (MLS) statistics show 965 homes re-sold. The average
selling price of these homes was $142,708 with the median selling price
being $129,000. In 1999, the selling prices ranged from $55,000 to
$425,000. The majority of the homes in Sun City West have two bedrooms and
2 baths. With few exceptions all housing units in Sun City West are one
story – there are no basements. Most of the original
construction is wood framed exterior walls with wood siding. Newer
sections of Sun City West continue to have wood framed construction but
the exterior siding is stucco rather than wood. In the early 1990's tile
roofs also began to appear in great numbers and quickly became the roof
covering of choice. The last homes built in Sun City West were constructed
around 1997, when construction moved to Sun City Grand.
Recreation & Entertainment
Sun City West has four recreation centers located through out the area
– each has an Olympic sized outdoor swimming pool –two of the centers have
indoor pools. The residents and their guests also have exclusive use of
seven of the nine golf courses in Sun City
West.
The residents and their guests also have exclusive use of the
recreation center facilities. The social
hall can seat 1,200 people for bingo and other activities. The residents
also own a 300 seat well equipped theater and a large library. The annual
recreation center fee for owner residents (mandatory for all owners) is
$148 per person (as of July 1, 2000). Facilities are well equipped and
open to all residents. Non-owner residents (renters) may also use the
facilities for a nominal fee.
Also located in Sun City West is the Sundome Center for the Performing
Arts which seats over 7,000 people and is the worlds largest single level
theater. The Sundome is host to numerous professional shows and plays and
has featured many of the worlds top performers. The Sun Cities Symphony a
95 piece orchestra also plays several concerts a year at the Sundome. |
